IMPORTANT PAGEANT INFO!

  • As of today, we have changed the morning routine for our Christmas Pageant. So, if you have had a daughter in this program in the past...please note the changes!!!
  • On Thursday, December 9 the 2nd graders are to come to school at their normal time wearing her cassock, white socks or tights & tennis shoes…I will have their ballet shoes for them to change into.  We will be shuttled across the street for the dress rehearsal and they will be dismissed from Holy Communion church at 10:30am (wearing their cassock).  They should return to the church at 4:30 dressed in cassock and cotta. Pageant will begin at 5pm.
  • The girls should wear something lightweight under their cassock as it gets very warm under the lights.
  • Important---  I will collect the cassock and cotta after the Christmas pageant.  Your daughter should be wearing something under her cassock to leave in, or you may want to bring a change of clothes for her depending on the cold weather.

Mrs. Landaiche's Penguin Study

From Mrs. Landaiche:
Second grade girls will have the opportunity to be "field researchers" as we follow the nesting habits of the Adelie penguins in Antarctica. Beginning around November 18 the students can record the time spent on the nests by the penguin parents. They will pick one nest to follow and mark how much time is spent by the penguins either on the nest or foraging for food. The students will record their information in their "field journals" (their SMS spirals). This is a voluntary assignment and computers in the classrooms will be available with the website bookmarked for easy access.

Christmas Pageant Practice

 Don’t forget that early morning practice for the Christmas pageant will begin on Monday, November 29th at 7:45.  It is critical for the girls to be at every practice.  We will begin promptly at 7:45.  If you drop your daughter off BEFORE 7:45, then she will report to the early morning room and we will take her to the gym.  But if she gets to school AFTER 7:45, she will go straight to the gym.

Partial Sums- Another Addition Strategy

One of the major math concepts we are working on this week is known as "Partial Sums."
It is another double-digit addition strategy.  We have worked a lot on this skill yesterday and today.  It will take lots of practice!  I will say that one of the main elements in solving this problem correctly is simply writing neatly and keeping the place values lined up with one another.

Example:
   45
+ 36
Add the tens 40 + 30 =70
Add the ones 5 + 6 = 11
So then add the tens and ones together
  70
+11
  81
****The problem should be written out like this....
  45
+36
  70
+11
  81

1-1-1 Rule (spelling rule)

The 1-1-1 Rule is a VERY IMPORTANT spelling rule.
It teaches you how to add a suffix to a base word.  Take a base word, and ask yourself does it have...
1 syllable?
1 short vowel?
1 consonant after the short vowel?
IF SO, double the final consonant and add the suffix.
Examples:  These base words DO follow the 1-1-1 Rule.
stop=  stopped
plan= planned
drip= dripping
Examples:  These words DO NOT follow the 1-1-1 Rule.
melt= melted
help=helping
look= looking

Watch out!  Don't double the final consonant for words that end in one vowel and the consonants w, x, or y- just add (ed) and (ing).
examples:  snow, fix, play, thaw, chew

The Dance Performance

Here's a link to the homepage of the dance company that we are taking the first and second grades to see on Friday. Below is a link to a good, short video that has excerpts from some of their pieces. The dance styles that they specialize in are contemporary and jazz. I think the girls will love it!!!
