IMPORTANT PAGEANT INFO!
- As of today, we have changed the morning routine for our Christmas Pageant. So, if you have had a daughter in this program in the past...please note the changes!!!
- On Thursday, December 9 the 2nd graders are to come to school at their normal time wearing her cassock, white socks or tights & tennis shoes…I will have their ballet shoes for them to change into. We will be shuttled across the street for the dress rehearsal and they will be dismissed from Holy Communion church at 10:30am (wearing their cassock). They should return to the church at 4:30 dressed in cassock and cotta. Pageant will begin at 5pm.
- The girls should wear something lightweight under their cassock as it gets very warm under the lights.
- Important--- I will collect the cassock and cotta after the Christmas pageant. Your daughter should be wearing something under her cassock to leave in, or you may want to bring a change of clothes for her depending on the cold weather.

Mrs. Landaiche's Penguin Study
From Mrs. Landaiche:
Second grade girls will have the opportunity to be "field researchers" as we follow the nesting habits of the Adelie penguins in Antarctica. Beginning around November 18 the students can record the time spent on the nests by the penguin parents. They will pick one nest to follow and mark how much time is spent by the penguins either on the nest or foraging for food. The students will record their information in their "field journals" (their SMS spirals). This is a voluntary assignment and computers in the classrooms will be available with the website bookmarked for easy access.

All About Colonial Times!
Click on the words in BLUE to find some great information about Colonial Times.
Thanks Mrs. Person for the amazing research!
Let's have some fun getting to know Felicity better! Go on a Colonial adventure with Felicity or help her save Ben! Take a Colonial tour. Learn about Colonial kids. Would you have survived in the Colonies? Dress like a Colonist. View the people of Colonial Williamsburg. How did the Colonists celebrate Christmas? Meet some Colonial Kids. Get more details about the Boston Tea Party from an eyewitness.

Christmas Pageant Practice
Don’t forget that early morning practice for the Christmas pageant will begin on Monday, November 29th at 7:45. It is critical for the girls to be at every practice. We will begin promptly at 7:45. If you drop your daughter off BEFORE 7:45, then she will report to the early morning room and we will take her to the gym. But if she gets to school AFTER 7:45, she will go straight to the gym.

Partial Sums- Another Addition Strategy
One of the major math concepts we are working on this week is known as "Partial Sums."
It is another double-digit addition strategy. We have worked a lot on this skill yesterday and today. It will take lots of practice! I will say that one of the main elements in solving this problem correctly is simply writing neatly and keeping the place values lined up with one another.
Example:
45
+ 36
Add the tens 40 + 30 =70
Add the ones 5 + 6 = 11
So then add the tens and ones together
70
+11
81
****The problem should be written out like this....
45
+36
70
+11
81

1-1-1 Rule (spelling rule)
The 1-1-1 Rule is a VERY IMPORTANT spelling rule.
It teaches you how to add a suffix to a base word. Take a base word, and ask yourself does it have...
1 syllable?
1 short vowel?
1 consonant after the short vowel?
IF SO, double the final consonant and add the suffix.
Examples: These base words DO follow the 1-1-1 Rule.
stop= stopped
plan= planned
drip= dripping
Examples: These words DO NOT follow the 1-1-1 Rule.
melt= melted
help=helping
look= lookingWatch out! Don't double the final consonant for words that end in one vowel and the consonants w, x, or y- just add (ed) and (ing).
examples: snow, fix, play, thaw, chew
The Dance Performance
Here's a link to the homepage of the dance company that we are taking the first and second grades to see on Friday. Below is a link to a good, short video that has excerpts from some of their pieces. The dance styles that they specialize in are contemporary and jazz. I think the girls will love it!!!

Thank You!
Sweet Girls,
Thank you so much for my candy! I was pleasantly surprised that everyone remembered to share one piece of their Halloween candy with me. You know how much I love candy and that I have such a sweet tooth. It made my day! xoxoxo

I Met Jordin Sparks!
While we were in New York we saw the Broadway Musical, In The Heights. It was absolutely amazing! One of my all time favorite shows. The lead was Jordin Sparks, 2007 American Idol winner and singer of several #1 hits! She was so nice and bubbly!

Candy Corn Contest
Today I started reading a book aloud to the class called, The Candy Corn Contest, by Patricia Giff. We are going to have our very own candy corn contest in the classroom. The girls will have several opportunities to guess how many candy corns are in the jar. The winner will win the ENTIRE jar of candy!!!
Ways to earn a guess for the jar:
1. Make a 100% on an AR test.
2. Exceptional behavior.
Contest Ends on October 29. The girl with the exact or closest guess wins!
Please Note: If there is a tie, the jar will be divided in half.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Dear Parents,
As you know, Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 21and Friday, October 22. As I mentioned at Back to School night, I will be in New York with my mom and brother during that time.
I know that this is a great inconvenience for you to have to schedule your conferences on another day especially for those with siblings. I do appreciate you working with me to meet at another time. I will do a few conferences prior to my trip, on Monday, Oct 18 and Tuesday, Oct 19. The remaining conferences will be scheduled the following week. For those of you that I will meet with on Oct. 18 and 19, I will print off a hard copy of the report card and send it home with your child the day before your conference so you will have an opportunity to look over it and jot down any questions you would like to ask. Attached are the dates and times that I am available. I will try to match you up with your first choice.
***PLEASE email me your first and second choice. Once I have it all figured out, I will email you our conference time. I do apologize about this conflict and hope that we will be able to schedule a time that will work for all of us.
Thank you! Ms. Hengen

Meet Speedy
Meet Speedy...our temporary class pet. I have owned Speedy for 11 years! He has lived in three states and several houses. I found Speedy one summer at Pickwick. When I took him home with me, little did I know that turtles can live for 40 yrs! Speedy has always been at my house, but is currently visiting our classroom. I have decided to give Speedy up for adoption. Mrs. Lancaster's nephew has always wanted a turtle. I know that Speedy will be happy in his new home, but in all honesty I will miss the little guy! He has become part of me!
So long Speedster! XOXOXO

More Fun with Facts
Need some more help?
While the girls are generally doing very well with addition facts, we seem to be struggling with the subtraction facts. I have found a few sites that may be helpful to you at home as you work with your girls to master their facts. Check these out!
Remember! Practice makes perfect! Allow time every night to go over math facts.
Thanks for all your help
